Outfield Drills
Recommendation
- Do any combination of these drills each time you work out.
- We recommend doing them at least twice a week, but you can do them daily!
Reaction Drill – (8 to 10 per side)
Objective: Work on a good first step and reaction time.
Set-up: Feet should be shoulder-width a part, knees bent, glove out front.
Instructions:
- Have a partner underhand toss a pop fly.
- Drop-step to the side the ball is tossed.
- Catch the ball above your head.
- Use two hands unless catching the ball on the run.
- Vary which side the pop fly is tossed without telling the player.
45-degree Drop-Step – (5-8 per side)
Objective: Work on drop-step and create a route to the ball.
Set-up: Feet should be shoulder-width a part, knees bent, glove out front.
Instructions:
- Fielder will take a 45-degree drop-step.
- Begin to run keeping your head down for first 2-3 steps.
- Have a partner throw you a fly ball.
- Find the baseball.
- Catch the ball above your head, as often as possible.
- Use two hands unless catching the ball on the run.
Drop-Step – (5-8 per side)
Objective: Work on drop-step and create a route to the ball.
Set-up: Feet should be shoulder-width a part, knees bent, glove out front.
Instructions:
- Fielder will drop-step straight back.
- Begin to run keeping your head down for first 2-3 steps.
- Have a partner throw you a fly ball.
- Find the baseball.
- Catch the ball above your head, as often as possible.
- Use two hands unless catching the ball on the run.
Duck Under– (5-8 per side)
Objective: Work on drop-step and create a route to the ball.
Set-up: Feet should be shoulder-width a part, knees bent, glove out front.
Instructions:
- Fielder will drop-step straight back.
- Begin to run keeping your head down for first 2-3 steps.
- Partner will throw a fly ball over the opposite shoulder that the player drop-steps.
- When your partner throws the ball, turn your head away from the thrower.
- Find the baseball.
- Catch the ball above your head, as often as possible.
- Use two hands unless catching the ball on the run.
